Most of the instruments built at the ATC are specifically designed for use at some of the world’s premier ground-based observatories. The telescopes are situated in remote mountain-top sites in places like Chile (altitude: 2600m) and Hawaii (altitude: 4100m). The harsh conditions encountered at the sites include low humidity and air pressure, temperature swings during one day throughout the seasons and also occasional earth quakes (at around 7.75 on the Richter Scale). The instruments are designed to be extremely reliable in all of these conditions and to survive transport to the sites.
