Polarimeters

Polarimeters

Polarimeters are included in many of the instruments we deliver (Michelle, UIST, GPol, MIRI links.)

Calibration Systems

Many of the instruments have on-board calibration units, either for spectral information or for photometric information. UK ATC has used a number of different methods to achieve these calibrations.

Active & adaptive optics

Active & adaptive optics

Many of the large optics delivered to telescopes recently are what’s known as active, meaning they include actuation systems to change the form of the mirror to compensate for aberrations due to gravity or temperature effects. UK ATC engineers have designed and built several of these systems based on different actuation and control schemes.

Embedded software & control systems

As mentioned before, all of the instruments contain large amounts of software for instrument control and data acquisition. The electronics group has a team of engineers dedicated to detector read out and control, who ensure the lowest possible noise performance. Control of the entire instrument, including cryogenic & mechanical systems and interfacing to the environment is realised by a multidisciplinary team drawn from all of the engineering disciplines including systems and software engineering
